Tuxedo Team's Guide to Cosplay Make-Up Part II

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 2, 2009, 9:58 AM

In continuation with our Cosplay Make-Up Guide, which by the way, was conveniently recycled from our seminar on Cosplay Preparations during last Book Fair and Cosmania, Behold! This paragraph is made of COSPLAY here is the other half of the presentation which consists of a more visually direct guide to LOOKING LIEK REEL ANIMU.

Everything here is once again, basic stuff that we picked up from experience or learning from those nifty online videos. We also do not wish to go ape-sh** on your butts regarding the processes. You are very much free to take note, disagree, or improve our methods according to your tastes.

If you have any suggestions, we would greatly appreciate them. :)

:bulletred::bulletorange::bulletyellow:NOTE:The make-up will obviously depend on what character you cosplay so apply these changes accordingly. We've posted basic cosplay looks such as the supah-kawaii Moe Look and spunky-funky-junky-for-your-love Bishie Look that you may modify to your liking. We hope they serve you well.

Be sure to check out the following too:
:bulletred: Cosplay Poses and Etiquette found at Jin*behindinfinity's page.

:target: Bishounen Make-Up Tips!

While my cross-playing skills aren't as solid as other awesome cosplayers out there, I can't deny that there's just something highly amusing about portraying a guy...at least in a fictional and controlled sense.

Anyway, here is a quick guide on how to achieve that manry look! Allow me to start with a commonly known character like Naruto for basic reference:

He looks kinda cool and, um, I'll try my best not to make this seem dorkier than it already is. I would've tried to be his older self and stab at a mature take on it, but my 12-14 year old features seem to render me incapable of looking like I mean SRS BZNZ.

STEP ONE: Prep your face!

:bulletyellow: Wash your face, tone, and moisturize.
Like painting, always start with a clean canvas. Moisturizing your skin actually helps remedy those dry/flaky areas and keeps your skin nice and supple. If your skin is somewhat on the oily side, you may opt for one that is especially designed for oily skin or you may skip it entirely if you're more comfy with that.

:bulletyellow: Put on your contacts
It would be ideal to put them on before everything else while your hands are still clean. I say that out of experience because I normally put them on last and end up stinging my eyes from my panic.

BE SURE TO PUT THEM ON CORRECTLY.
Contact lenses are NOT reversible. With colored lenses especially, there is a specific side that is meant to protect the iris while the opposite side which is painted with color, should be facing outward. Otherwise, it would be like putting paint in your eyes and would ultimately damage your eyesight. So don't do it, guise. Consult your eye doctor with regards to wearing contacts if you aren't confident about them yet.

STEP TWO & THREE: Use concealer and foundation!

:bulletyellow: Dab concealer on blemishes and dark spots first.
We usually use our fingertips to do this, but you may also use brushes to get into those small areas.
Also, DON'T SMUDGE concealer under your eyes. Apply them on using a light dabbing motion. The skin under your eyes is rather sensitive so rubbing or smudging promotes wrinkles.

:bulletyellow: Apply foundation following the contours of your face.
You may use a brush or a wet sponge to apply the foundation.
To set it or keep shine off your face, apply some loose powder.

STEP FOUR & FIVE: Apply lipstick and eyeliner!

:bulletorange: THIS PORTION IS OPTIONAL
You may or may not choose to do this if it's too bothersome. By preference, it's just something we do for added effect.

:bulletyellow: When using liquid liner, tilt your head up for easier application. Don't blink for a few seconds to allow the liner to dry first.
Applying eyeliner isn't really something boys do but then while we are on the subject of bishounen characters, the fact is, they're supposedly PRETTY and hey, 2D imags at that. So eyeliner does add accents to the eyes making them look somewhat more anime-like.

:bulletyellow: Neutralize your lips using a nude lipstick or concealer
Male characters in anime shows have nothing more than a thin line to represent their lips. So while in real life, both men and women do have rather pinkish lips, neutralizing the color does add to the so-called "MANRY" effect and lessens the illusion that you're wearing lipstick or tinted lip balm.

STEP SIX & SEVEN: Thickening eyebrows and applying facial marks

:bulletyellow: Stroke eyebrows with brow liner
This greatly accentuates the whole look because men don't usually don thin brows. Apply the eyebrow liner in thin threaded strokes following the direction of your hair; slowly shaping them to appear thicker.

If your eyebrows are dark like mine, apply a bit of concealer first to lighten them up and then apply the liner.

But Naruto's blonde! Why use BROWN liner?
Because most blondes naturally have darker brows than the hair on their head. I also don't suppose there is blonde eyebrow liner, is there? Either way, I'm not certain how yellow eyebrows exactly work - I could be wrong though.

:bulletyellow: Apply Naruto's "whiskers" with brown eyebrow pencil
You may use other alternatives to applying scars/marks and stuff like acrylic paint, facial paint, prosthetic scars - which ever floats your boat.

The important thing is always to make sure you aren't applying anything that might hurt your face. I've seen people use poster paint but I heard it stings or cracks, so I suppose that's not very reliable.

STEP EIGHT: Put on your wig!

:bulletyellow: Wig caps! They exist to aid you in your endeavors!
Use a wig cap to cover and set your hair in place before putting on a wig. If you have long, thick hair, I heard you may use two for double strength and make use of hairpins to fasten it on your head.

Peeking hair from under your wig fail to flatter anyone.

FINAL RESULTS!

Now go make like a ninjuh and do you best Naruface!

:target: Moe Make-Up Tips!

For this guide, we have Kat~moonlightflight sharing her moe make-up process as she cosplays Mikuru from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I must say that she is quite a darling in character and quite the make-up whiz herself.

Here is a lovely little reference shot of Mikuru as we know and love her.:rose:

STEP ONE: Prep your face!

:bulletyellow: Wash your face, tone, and moisturize.
Very important and pretty much the same idea as in the bishounen guide.

:bulletyellow: Put on your contacts
Do this right after washing your face especially since make-up for female characters requires a little more added ritual.

BE SURE TO PUT THEM ON CORRECTLY.
I'm pasting this here again just to reiterate.

STEP TWO: Use eyelid glue

:bulletorange: THIS PORTION IS OPTIONAL

:bulletyellow: This is more applicable for Asians who have mono-lids.
The purpose of using eyelid glue is basically to add a crease on your eyelids to give the illusion of bigger eyes.

STEP THREE & FOUR: Use concealer and foundation!

:bulletyellow: Dab concealer on blemishes and under the eyes.
Do not smudge or rub concealer around the eye area to avoid stretching the skin and causing wrinkles.

:bulletyellow: Apply foundation following the contours of your face.
You may use a brush or a wet sponge to apply the foundation.
To set it or keep shine off your face, apply some loose powder.

STEP FIVE: Apply false eyelashes

:bulletorange: THIS PORTION IS OPTIONAL
You may opt to simply curl your lashes and use mascara if you'd like. Make sure that the mascara is the waterproof kind so as not to have it melting away on your eyes during half of the day.

Otherwise, false eyelashes do the trick in making your eyes appear bigger. It takes a bit of practice to get them on though; I know I struggle with them too.

Be sure to put on the false eyelashes before the eyeliner.

STEP SIX: Apply eyeliner and eye shadow

:bulletyellow: When using liquid liner, tilt your head up for easier application.
:bulletyellow: Don't blink for a few seconds to allow the liner to dry first.
Female characters tend to have more expressive eyes than that of males. So try to study how your character looks and apply different ways of lining your eyes based on their personalities.

:bulletyellow: Highlight your eyes.
Following the directional arrows, apply a bit of white eye shadow to highlight certain areas of her eyes. Mostly, the ends to contour and make your eyes appear brighter.

:bulletyellow: TIP: Applying white eyeliner around the corners of your eyes helps make them look bigger. I usually also apply them on my lower lashes when I feel my eyes look droopy and I'd like to look wide awake, plz.

STEP SEVEN: Lining your eyebrows

:bulletyellow: Stroke eyebrows with brow liner
Use a color that is close to that of your wig. Since Mikuru has somewhat auburn hair, Kat made use of brown eyeliner with highlights of orange eyeshadow on the ends.

You may not notice it at first but the eyebrows are one of the most overlooked features on our face. Along with our eyes, they express a lot of emotion even when we aren't frowning.

It's important that for female characters, the brows are well groomed and lined appropriately to fit the character. Otherwise, like in this case, Mikuru could've looked enraged like her brows would catch fire if special attention was not given.

STEP EIGHT & NINE: Work on lips and cheeks

:bulletyellow: Moisturize lips and keep it natural.
Protect your lips from drying and cracking by using a clear lip balm.

Depending on your character, try to keep your lips nice and natural. You don't want to overdo your make-up and look totally inappropriate.

:bulletyellow: Apply blush on the apples of your cheeks.
Again, don't over do this. Find a shade that makes you look naturally flushed and not clown-like.

STEP TEN: Wear your wig!

:bulletyellow: Don't forget to use your wig cap!
You don't want to have unflattering strands of hair peeking out while you cosplay, now do you?

Once again, if you have long, thick hair, I heard you may use two for double strength and make use of hairpins to fasten it on your head.

FINAL RESULTS!

Practice your moe face and you're good to go!

Ahhhh, I wondered if you guys wore wig caps! Those things are sooo helpful. Something I learned in high school theatre: You can make your own wig cap by cutting the legs off a pair of panty hose and tying up the cut ends so that no hair falls out. It works great!

hmm.. wig caps.. i don't use those ^^' the ones in sweden is.. ugh.. REALLY bad, i haven't yet found any that works, and i've got short hair. i use many hairpins and strong hairspray. looks reeeeaaaallyyyy funny when you take the wig of, afterwards, but i hardly get embarrassed. as is the same with most people in my class (actors, musicans, artists, such morons (yes, i call myself a moron)). it's my hair, if anyone teases me for it, i don't care. well, i speak my mind, anyways. ^^

but thanks a lot for the guide. ^^

Thanks! El actually presented the make-up portion and we all pitched ideas together to organize the information. :)
